LI: To develop summarising skills, to improve knowledge of dictionary definitions, to develop independent reading skills, to classify objects into groups, to read unfamiliar important labels.


Starter – Watch Newsround and tell someone at home what you saw.  If you want to challenge yourself, quiz someone at home like we do in school.  You think of the questions and get the answers from Newsround. ( or on BBC iPlayer each day, or broadcast at 8.15am or 4.20pm on CBBC).

Task 1 – Read this word: Potions

Can you say it? What does it mean? Can you think of any you have heard of or seen? Tell someone what you think it is.

Here is what the Dictionary says:

Potion - a drink that has medicinal, poisonous, or magical powers.

Did you get it right?


Task 2 – Find some things that could be potions in your house. Potions are always liquid. What can you find?  Are there any things that look like potions in the Kitchen?  Or the Bathroom? Gather them together – you will need them for Art.


Task 3 – Think about these two terms:  Toxic           Non – Toxic

What do you think they mean?  Tell someone in your house or write it down if you are on your own.  Now check the dictionary definitions below:

Toxic – having the effect of a poison.  Causing unpleasant feelings; harmful or malicious (mean).

Non – Toxic – not causing a toxin or poison; safe.

Did you guess correctly?


Task 4 – Split the potions you have found in your home into two groups: toxic and non-toxic.  Which look safe to drink and which do not?  If you are not sure, ask someone to help you look at the bottle and figure out what it is for, or what the ingredients say. Talk about the potions you have found with an adult in your house and ask them to check your groups.  Have you kept everyone safe by grouping the toxic potions together?

Keep the bottles with you for your Art session.



If you have access to a camera and printer, take photos of the potions you have found and print them.  Cut them all out and create a collage with them.  Don’t forget to add a big title that says ‘potions’.  Leave space on your poster to add some key words as we go through the term. Words you can add already:

Toxic, non-toxic, poison, medicine.

If you do not have a printer or camera, make a poster of the potion bottles you can see in front of you.  Write the title ‘Potions’ and add the key words listed above.  You can add in any drawings of potions you can imagine or pictures you can find on the internet.

If you do not want to draw, find pictures of potions in magazines and cut them out to create a collage. 

Or, make all three of these options into one giant poster!  You can add to it as we go throughout the term.
